Date Night: Pizza & Beer

We started my husband’s birthday weekend off by enjoying a date night. I heard from friends that The Station was really yummy,  and then I read an article about it in Sunset Magazine and I was sold!

The Station boasts a huge wood-fired pizza oven, a fantastic menu, local brews on tap and great atmosphere with a super friendly staff.  The restaurant was packed so we had a beer on the adorable patio while we waited. Christmas lights and cool, brisk autumn air are essential for a good date night in October. While snuggling on the patio, we got a really good look at the menu and although there were not many vegetarian options (I’m a pescatarian, have been for 12 years), I had my eye on a pizza called Boss Lady and intended to order it without chicken. It has Maytag blue cheese, basil chiffonade, fresh eight vegetable medley, and Serrano pepper…hello there, Boss Lady, yes please. Allow me to digress for a moment and share my disappointment about NOT trying the Boss Lady pizza. It is so popular that they ran out of vegetable medley! I was so sad. I asked the waiter if it would be worth it without it and he said no way, so I’ll just have to go back and try it another time. *Sigh* Okay, so my back up order was the classic Margherita Fresca, always a good choice. My hubby had the Albatross, pictured below, which has house-smoked pork belly, Serrano pepper, grana, and a sunny-side up egg. He was over the moon with his selection, and I enjoyed the freshness of the ingredients and the fantastic crust. It was hand tossed and perfectly crispy, not overly seasoned . On to drinks! My first beer, not pictured, was a Fort George Sunrise Oatmeal Pale Ale and my hubby tried the Triple Horn Irish Red. Both were delish and we would definitely order them again. For dessert they had a pretty tempting menu, cannoli, panna cotta, fresh baked cookies, gelato…aye yi yi! After pizza and beer, we had to go a little on the lighter side, so we went with gelato. We tried 3 flavors, lemon, chocolate peanut butter and spicy chocolate. The clear winner was chocolate peanut butter because of the ridiculously gigantic peanut butter chunks. It was a great meal and a great time with my hubby.

If you’re in Woodinville, taste some beer and/or wine, and stop by The Station for some seriously good pizza. I can’t wait to go back and try more items off the menu!

Have a great Tuesday!

Washington State Fair: F-U-N

Ahhhh, the fair. Dreams of eating funnel cake in the sunshine and going on rides all afternoon. What’s that you say? It’s going to be cold and rainy? That doesn’t scare us one bit! I’m too old for roller-coasters? No way!

Here it is, the real deal:

We knew going in that it would be cold, and I believe there was an 80% chance of rain. When we arrived, it was not raining, just a bit chilly, and we had high hopes. We made our way to most important thing of the day, the Washington State Fair Amateur Beer Competition booth. It was a glorious moment to see that my hubby and our dear friend, Mel, had done so well. They placed 2nd and 3rd for some of the beers they entered, and I couldn’t be prouder of them. They’re pretty awesome at what they do. With that checked off the list, we were ready for some adventure! We went full steam ahead towards one of those rides that takes you up really, really high and then drops you, and you feel like your stomach is in your throat. It was exhilarating, and with that ride under our belts, we went straight for the next ride, a steel roller-coaster that had many loops and appeared like child’s play after what we had seen. With my arms stretched straight out over my head, the ride takes off, and I’m thinking to myself, “why don’t we go on rides more often??” Yeah, that was short-lived. We hit a serious dip, and I smacked my head way too hard on the head rest. Just like that, arms are down, and I want off. I felt old. You may be wondering how to recover from such a realization…baby farm animals, of course!

20131003-203922.jpg

It’s a little embarrassing to see how crazy I went over the baby farm animals. That’s a lie, they’re adorable and I’m owning this obsession. After the farm animals, we ate some fried food, played some games, got soaking wet in the rain, and won this guy.

That’s the Washington State Fair in a nutshell. It was good times. Did you go to your state fair this year?

Fall Shopping Wish List: Shoes & Accessories

Want, want, want!!! Sorry, had to get that out of my system. Between blog reading, Instagram, magazines, and subscribing to far too many shopping sites, I am being totally inundated with Fall fashion…and I love it. I’ve been compiling a wish list of sorts, which means I’ve been window shopping on-line. In all honesty, I will probably only purchase a few of these items, and I will be very patient and deliberate with what I actually purchase. These are just a few of my faves in the world of accessories.

For my feet…

Olive Cap with Leather Brim: Target, Ivory Textured Beanie: Target, Tweed Cap: Target, Mustard Beanie: Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters is having a big Fall sale right now, so I urge you to check it out. Nordstrom Rack always has amazing deals, and I have had great luck with shoes there. Target never fails me, and I love them for it. Asos is also a go to of mine, check it out.

What are you shopping for right now?

Life in Photos: Mercer Island Adventure with a Bestie

I’ve been working away on the Fall fashion posts/wardrobe organization, but I have managed to get in some shopping too. Check out my newly thrifted Michael Kors wedges. I found these at Mercer Island Thrift Shop and couldn’t believe what a good deal these were…$15! I can’t wait to wear these with tights, dresses, and big cozy sweaters. Even better…these will easily transition into Spring/Summer.

Mercer Island - Michael Kors

This was a good day with my bestie, filled with great food and thrifting. I would highly recommend Stopsky’s Delicatessen if you’re in the area. We tried the lox & eggs, borscht, and the highlight of the meal, ricotta blintzes. The blintzes were AMAZING. Not only was the food delicious, but the decor was just adorable and  the service was fantastic. Also in the photo collage below, please note that the street lamp post has a crocheted sleeve…too cute for words.

Fall Fashion 2013: Shoes & Accessories Inventory

For those of you just joining in on the Fall Fashion series, I have completed the closet rotation from Spring/Summer to Fall/Winter and am getting organized. It’s that time of year to decide which items in my closet are keepers, which ones are never getting worn, and and which ones need a little TLC. It’s also that time of year to decide which new trends I’d like to try, and shop for the necessities. Shoes & accessories are a huge part of every girl’s wardrobe and muy importante, so this is where I’m starting.

First, I pulled all of my shoes out of my closet and lined them up. Some of my shoes never saw the light of day, so I have identified the cut list.

From left to right: Silver sequin flats–I wore them maybe once last Fall and have decided that they are more Spring/Summer to me, so they are getting packed away until the sun returns. Sweater shaft boots–I have had these for about 5 years and have worn them about 5 times…you do the math. These will be donated. Heeled leather booties–I got a lot of wear out of these over the last couple years, but I am the proud new owner of some great, everyday, more comfy booties, so these are being donated. Here it is, the cut list.

Sad day for these soldiers.

Sad day for these soldiers.

Now that we have said goodbye to some old friends, let’s see what I’ve got to work with, shall we?

FLATS: Overall, I’m feeling good here. I’d love to add a pair of oxfords in somewhere, and I’d like to see a punch of color somewhere (a deep plum or oxblood red perhaps), but those are not necessities, so I’ll add these two to the want list. I’ll be on the look out for some good deals.

On to boots & wedges…

BOOTS & WEDGES: I am pretty set on the boots front, but since I wear them so often in the PNW, I could definitely add another a pair, and I know I’d get use out of them. I’d love to see more color…maybe a pair of navy wedge booties are in my future. Again, this went into the want column, so there’s no rush here.

Accessories time! I’m not a big hats girl, but I do love scarves. I find that I wear the same few scarves over and over, so I’d like to make a conscious effort to mix it up, because after doing this exercise, I see that I have lots of great scarves.

Scarves...knit, silk, chiffon, store bought, handmade by Grandma, you name it, it's here.

SCARVES & HATS: I would love to add a leopard print scarf, but this is definitely a want, not a need. As for the hats, this is a sad, sad showing, so I’ll be on the look out for some colorful beanies and maybe another cap. Again though, I have a list of wants, and don’t actually need anything.

Doing an exercise like this is therapeutic. I find that my creative juices start flowing, and I get excited to see items that I haven’t seen since last Fall, and it feels a little like shopping. It makes me feel fortunate to have as much as I do, and although the “want monster” rears its ugly head, I’m reminded to be mindful of my spending and to give to those who are less fortunate, so my shoe donations are going to Dress for Success. After this overhaul is complete, all applicable items will be donated to this good cause and that’s good for the soul. See? Therapeutic!

Enjoy your Sunday!

Fall Fashion 2013: Game Plan

Here’s my plan… I am armed and ready!

Post its, notebook, pencil, Sharpie and a glass of water...this is tough work!

Post its, notebook, pencil, Sharpie and a glass of water…this is tough work!

Step 1: What I have

Review what you have and really be honest about what you got use out of last year. If you didn’t wear it last year, why didn’t you wear it, will you wear it this year? You’re also looking for holes in your wardrobe. Are there new trends you’d like to try out? Is there a crazy void of color? Keep these thoughts in mind, as you go and jot them down. I absolutely have to write things down to remember them, so make notes if it helps you. Mental notes are good too.

Step 2: List of needs and wants

Once you’ve gone through what you have, you can really see what you’re missing. Make a list with two columns, needs and wants. If you can’t repair your favorite black cardigan and you wear it all the time, that’s a need. If you’ve been thinking you could use a pink wool coat like the one Eva Mendes wore that one time, that’s a want. This helps focus your thoughts for shopping.

Step 3: Ditch or donate

Go through and decide what isn’t getting worn this year. I have a couple items every year that hang in the closet all season long, then get stored for next season and then hang in the closet all season long again. BE HONEST. If you’re not going to wear it and it’s in great shape, you have options–donate to a friend who will wear it, donate to Goodwill or Dress for Success, or if you need the cash, sell it to a place like Buffalo Exchange or Plato’s Closet.  On the other hand, if it has seen better days, and isn’t worthy of being donated, throw it away or use it for scrap fabric. No matter what, don’t let it take up valuable space in your closet.

Step 4: Repair or re-imagine

Do you have items that just don’t fit properly, items that haven’t been worn because you’re missing a button or have a broken zipper? Fix them and enjoy them! Do you have a dress that is just a little too long, a top that needs to be taken in just a smidge? Alter them! Do you have a skirt in a gorgeous pattern and can’t figure out why you haven’t worn it? Re-imagine! Can it be a mini instead of a maxi? Can it be a top? Can you add a new waistband? Get creative and if possible, take on the project yourself. If you’re not comfortable attempting a project like this, find a tailor and make it work for you.

Step 5: Set a budget for shopping

It is tempting to go out on a shopping spree and buy all items on your need list and perhaps a few from your want list. I have found that spacing it out allows me to buy more of what I really love. If I know that I have $50 to spend per paycheck (two weeks) then I can take my time, shop on-line, stop in to shops and really buy something that I love. When I have money burning a hole in my handbag, and I know I’m shopping for a pair of black booties, I buy the first good deal I see. This could also be that I’m a serial list maker and REALLY enjoy crossing things off my list, but I think it’s also about being excited to buy things. Bottom line, fashion is fun, it’s a way to express your personality for all to see, BUT it becomes really uncool when you’re in debt because of your shopping habits. Soooo, set a budget and play it cool. There are tons of deals out there to be found…Amazon, Forever 21, Asos, Nordstrom Rack, TJ Maxx,  TargetScoutfit, Shoedazzle, and the list goes on…

Step 6: Make sure your new additions have friends

When buying new items, make sure that you already have things to pair with it. The best purchases are versatile items that will enter into your wardrobe seamlessly and have lots and lots of  “friends” / possibilities.

Alright, tomorrow we tackle shoes & accessories. Flip through magazines and visit for your favorite blogs for Fall inspiration…I know I will be.

Fall Fashion 2013: Here we go!

Fall fashion is a true love of mine. I adore the change of seasons, the fresh, brisk air, the gorgeous colors and wearing boots. The one thing that troubles me every time is the cost of revamping my fall wardrobe. Spring/Summer is a piece of cake…new tanks, a few day dresses, a couple new pair of sandals, a new lip color and bam, I’m refreshed and trend right for like $100 (impressive, I know). Fall, simply cannot be done for so little, but it can be done in a cost effective way. Most important to achieving a season right, trend right wardrobe is taking inventory of what you already have. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

20130923-214713.jpg

This week you’ll accompany me while I take inventory and come up with a game plan to stretch my dollar and look great this Fall.

My ideas are not ground breaking, BUT they do require you to…

A) be honest about what you wear/will wear

B) be open to some projects (take up a hem, replace a button on an old fave instead of tossing it, etc)

C) be proactive about shopping (find deals, don’t just visit the big retailers)

Here’s to Fall!

Tray Table Makeover Update

As you all know, attempt one was a fail, a big one. With that said, I did a freehand sketch directly on the table, and I’m pretty happy with this design. It has the same feel as that West Elm rug in my original post here. I need to sand the table again and then choose colors. Fingers crossed that attempt two is more successful.

Have a great weekend!

Backpacking — for real this time

As a send off to an amazing summer here in the PNW, we ventured out on another backpacking trip, only for real this time. The hike…4 miles. The elevation climb…2700 ft. The verdict…I was grossly unprepared for how difficult this would be. I figured that I had done hikes similar before, so I’d be totally fine. Boy, was I wrong! This was the most grueling hiking experience I’ve ever had, truly pushing myself to the limit, motivating myself with thoughts like “mind over matter” and (from the movie Finding Nemo) “just keep swimming”. With that said, it was glorious! I was so proud of myself and felt such a sense of accomplishment. The view is truly breathtaking.

My home for the weekend.

My home for the weekend.

For this trip, we needed to pack very light because the hike was so tough. My pack was about 25 lbs and consisted of food for my husband and I, a pot for boiling water, utensils, my sleeping bag, sleeping pad, clothes, toiletries and first aid kit. For the hike in, I wore a pair of denim cut offs with a tank and long sleeve hooded tee, wool socks and hiking boots. I packed a basic tee and an extra tank, yoga pants, fleece pajama pants (doubled as a pillow), extra socks and undies, my swimsuit and water shoes. Here is the look for day 1.

Pretty sure that I'm asking my hubby to carry my pack for me.

Pretty sure that I’m asking my hubby to carry my pack for me.

For food, we had to keep it to the bare minimum, so we had to be strategic and deliberate. We went to Fred Meyer and hit the camping section for freeze dried meals in a bag. They are kind of pricey @ $10.00/bag but suuuper convenient and very filling, so totally worth it. In the pic below, you can see that we packed almonds, peanut butter and rice cakes, oatmeal and tuna packets. We had to pick up some crackers and dried fruit, so there was a Trader Joe’s trip after this pic was taken. **Side note, we basically raided our pantry and made use of what we already had.

Blanca Lake Food

Sodium central — of course, after the trip we came up with great ideas, like apples and baby carrots.

When we arrived, it hit me that we had no camping chairs and that there would be no benches or picnic tables. Our campsite was definitely primitive, with a fire pit and a couple logs for sitting. Let me tell you, after that hike, a log was a beanbag chair to me! Anyway, we got smart and used our sleeping pads to sit on and really sprawl out. Best.Idea.Ever. See?

Gettin' some zzzzzz.

Gettin’ some zzzzzz.

As for the items that we needed to function for the weekend… a water purifier and a hatchet. The lake water is gorgeous but unsafe to drink, so we filled the bladder with lake water and hung it from a tree so  the filtration system could work its magic. A large portion of our food required hot water to cook, so between that and drinking water, we went through a lot of water and this worked like a charm. There’s also no way that we could have packed in enough water to get us through the weekend. As for the hatchet…why, for chopping wood, of course! Being able to chop wood provides a nice warm fire, and that means cooking and keeping the bugs away. There are, of course, a ton of super cool, fancy pants backpacking items out there, but these were the ones that we simply could not do without.

Now, I just have to share some of the great photos my husband took.

Here they are ladies and gentlemen, our amazing friends.

This trip was fantastic, but we really are into the whole camping thing and have been for years. Here’s why:

1) Nature’s beauty

2) Being unplugged

3) Really connecting with each other & friends

4) It’s cheap

For this excursion we spent a whopping $10 for the parking pass, about $50 on food/alcohol and $12 for a headlamp for me. That brings us to a grand total of $72 for 3 days/2 nights. We do have a lot of gear that we have accumulated over the years, but if you shop off season and scour the internet for deals, you can get yourself everything you need to enjoy the great outdoors.

This was an awesome experience, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I hope you had a great weekend and are giving summer a proper send off.
