Clipboard Calendar

20140331-143009.jpg

I saw clipboards used as picture frames and art displays on A Beautiful Mess here and on Apartment Therapy here. I’ve had this idea in the back of my mind for a long time, and while thrifting this weekend, I came across two clipboards, and for $1.98, they were mine. Initially, I thought I’d print two photos and hang them up, end of project. No, that’s not how it went at all. I printed off two photos and thought they looked a little blah, and I quickly realized that it was probably because the displays I had seen were of more than two clipboards, or of a few layers of photos, and it really made a statement . What does one impatient crafty girl do when her plan fails? She makes a garland. I began going through my scrap fabric bin so I could make a garland to connect the two clipboards. Once the garland was complete, I knew I was on my way, but then I looked at the clock, and it was 9pm, I had been in my craft room all evening and missed my husband, so I headed out to the living room for some QT with him and the pups. From the moment my head hit that pillow, I couldn’t stop thinking about what to do with my project…more photos, layers of printed card stock, fabric swatches, dried flowers??? And then, that’s when it hit me…how about a calendar for keeping track of the blog posts and projects?! So, I made myself two sheets, a calendar on the left and on the right, just numbers and lines so I can list out the projects I’d like tackle. It adds style to the room, while providing function and helping to corral my ideas. I love the way it turned out, and the idea of personalizing it each month, and layering in fabrics and photos makes me really happy.

Pinto Bean Stew & Cheddar Jalapeno Corn Dumplings

20140327-214709.jpg
As promised, here is the recipe for the pinto bean stew I made in the crockpot on Sunday. You can find the original recipe here at Eating Well. I would only make a few changes to this recipe, starting with the addition of cheese to the dumplings because, well, why not? I used medium cheddar because that’s what I had in the fridge, but would have preferred sharp cheddar. Next time I will double the jalapeño in the dumplings, but I like spicy food, so if you order a 4 at Thai restaurants too, double it. I really enjoyed the crunch of the radish in this dish, so next time I might dice the radish to maximize the bites with delicious radish crunch. And, last but certainly not least, add some hot sauce. Tapatio with beans is a kind of a no brainer.

20140327-203051.jpgPrep was a breeze. Really, you just need to chop some veggies and measure out the ingredients, and then put it into the crockpot.

20140327-203104.jpgThis is what it will look like, once it’s all in the crockpot.

20140327-203113.jpgThe dumplings were very easy too, and once you whisk the dry ingredients and add the buttermilk, this is what the dough should look like. This took maybe 10 minutes, if that.

20140327-203123.jpgTake some generous scoops of dumpling dough and drop them into the crockpot. At this point, everything needs to continue cooking for one more hour.

20140327-203130.jpgIn the final 5-10 minutes, chop your radishes and cilantro. And then, feast!

Happy Friday to all, on this very gloomy and rainy day in the PNW.

Life in Photos: Red & White

This was a short but lovely weekend, and although I had to work on Saturday (boooo), I found some time for binge-watching New Girl on Netflix while eating ice cream, –fear not, there are no photos of that– getting excited over some flowers blooming in my backyard, a fun Friday evening with friends and homemade pizza, thrift shopping, and a little cooking while listening to music.

20140324-100821.jpgHow cute are these little white flowers and my garden owl?

20140324-100829.jpgMy girl, Angie, sure can make a pizza. Yum!

20140324-100745.jpgLoving these new flats, but also excited to wear the cute spring jacket I found. I’m sure it will make an appearance this week.

20140324-100810.jpgWith the sun shining on Sunday, I opted to make a crockpot dinner so I could get out and enjoy it. This recipe required very little prep and it was delicious, details to follow this week. In other news, I found a great playlist on Songza called Minstream Indie. I knew about 80% of the songs and loved them all but still found new music that I liked a lot. If you haven’t tried Songza, I totally recommend it.

Happy Monday!

Welcome Back, Spring!

20140321-152407.jpg

With Spring officially here it is crucial to remember that we still have some chilly weather ahead, but there’s no harm in daydreaming about what I’m going to do with all of our green space this year.

Speaking of chilly weather…the rain is not going anywhere, anytime soon up here in the PNW. I got a sweet text from my sister-in-law this morning, with this brilliant idea. This would be lovely on my porch and totally functional. The rocks provide drainage and a place to house your wet boots after working in the yard.

20140321-152431.jpgImage from HGTV.com

I will be planting some veggies again this year, most likely green beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, and carrots. I would really like to try out vertical gardening, using stakes to create teepees.

20140320-191552.jpg

It’s no secret that I love being outside, so with spring here, I’ll be running outside more. There was some sun on the first day of spring here (although missing from this photo), so obviously, I went for a run. The lavender is so vibrant and it’s everywhere in our neighborhood.

20140321-143127.jpg

I normally run in our neighborhood because I adore all of the little ramblers and all of their charm. On my run yesterday, I came across these adorable birdhouses in a tree.

I’ve been trying come up with some garden ideas for the front and backyard, so I’ll share some inspiration next week.

Happy Weekend to everyone!

Today’s BGD // 3.18.14

STP80202Today we learned that some friends lost an important member of their family last night, their dog, Hershey. Hershey was there before they had their two beautiful girls, before we had the pleasure of becoming friends, and she has been there to brighten their days and love them unconditionally. She was an amazing dog with the best spirit, and we have very fond memories of camping and hiking with her. Hershey was a Chocolate Lab / Border Collie mix and a huge part of why we wanted a Border Collie when we first began the search for our furry friends, Dodger and Mia. Hershey was smart and energetic, and always wanted to play, even when she should rest. Although this news is sad, we have to remember the beauty in having a pet that is truly a part of the family. We have to appreciate the pets that are with us and let them know that they are loved. Our friends are going to need time to allow this heartbreak to heal, but the one thing that can always get us through is a memory. Today’s BGD is devoted to fond memories. I know that I’m going to give my pups some extra snuggles and lots of love, and maybe tell them a little story about Hershey Doggy, who was our inspiration for finding them.

Life In Photos: St. Paddy’s Day Dash

20140317-144242.jpg

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I just have to share some photos from yesterday. This year is our 7th year of running the St. Paddy’s Day Dash in Seattle, supporting the Detlef Schrempf Foundation. Detlef Schrempf Foundation supports many Northwest children’s charities. When you register for the run, you have the opportunity to donate additional funds to organizations such as  Camp Fire USA Puget Sound Council, Seattle Children’s Autism Center, Inspire Youth Project, and the Healing Center. Learn more here. Aside from our money going to a good cause, we have a core group of friends that run this with us every year, and it is one of my favorite traditions. After the 6k our dear friend, –an avid non-runner– Mel, hosts a party for us and she continues to outdo herself every year. She opens her home to us, so we can change and get into some warm clothes –it’s Seattle, obviously it rains on us– and then she feeds us delicious food. Does it get any better?

20140317-143524.jpgHere’s the group, pre-race.

20140317-143603.jpgBoys will be boys…monkeying around while waiting to cross the street.

20140317-135334.jpgThe ladies, showing off our tutus. I will put together a tutorial early this week on how to make the tutus. They are so easy!

20140317-143622.jpgMel putting the finishing touches on the Baileys & Coffee shots. Also pictured, chocolate chip scones. I know, wow.

20140317-143532.jpgChampagne & pineapple juice, accessorized with shamrock ribbons and straws. Adorable aaaand tasty.

20140317-135141.jpgMini Chicken & Waffles. Hold on to your hats…this is the first of the mini breakfast foods that Mel served. Genius idea!

20140317-135237.jpgMini Coconut Shrimp & Waffles. Ridiculously good.

20140317-135221.jpgI’m not sure what Mel called these, but they were essentially Mini Omelets, with cheese and veggies. Also pictured in back, dried nectarines with blue cheese and nuts.

20140317-135230.jpgMini Quiche with Chicken Sausage.

20140317-135243.jpgA dasher brought Mini Cinnamon Rolls. Yum.

20140317-135304.jpgAnother friend brought these Pistachio Pudding Cups, always a hit in our group.

20140317-135211.jpgAnd, I was boring. I brought some of the mimosa fixin’s but also these little fruit skewers, with honeydew, kiwi, and green grapes.

Do you have any St. Patrick’s Day traditions?

Kitchen Renovations // Part 1

20140314-101927.jpg

We have been through various home renovations and none pose the same level of inconvenience as a kitchen remodel. When we overhauled our master bath, we used the guest bath and vice versa. When we remodeled the master bedroom, we slept in the guest bedroom. There was always somewhere else for us to be with the other rooms in the house, but when it comes to the kitchen, there is nowhere to go.  Our kitchen has been through a lot –more on that later– but this was the first time ever I thought to create a makeshift kitchen for us, so we could (kind of) carry on like normal. Although this helped tremendously, dinners were still difficult for us, and we did not eat very well this week. Where it DID help, was in the mornings. I am a devoted smoothie and coffee drinker in the morning, so I set up my tray table with the coffee maker and blender so I could easily to get to them and prepare my favorites with ease. I also thought to place a cutting board on the dining room table, along with my crockpot, and the fruit bowl, so I could prepare food in the dining room, if needed. I pulled our chest into the dining room as well, so we had a place for the microwave, so really, we had enough to get by.

20140314-090347.jpg

20140314-090330.jpg 20140314-090339.jpgNow that you’ve seen my sad makeshift kitchen, let’s move on to the fun part –the transformation in our kitchen! We have come a long way, and I’ll get to that later, but to give you an idea, this is what our kitchen looked like when we moved in, back in 2009.

20140314-133239.jpg

Our kitchen has gone through many phases, but we are actually almost done now. One of the last pieces was the backsplash tile. We chose marble, and I’m in love.

20140314-090159.jpg

After purchasing, we got home and I opened up a box to make sure my love was true. And it was.

20140314-090241.jpg

Then my husband applied thin set, placed the tiles and kept it all straight and in place with spacers. We opted for a 1/8 inch grout line.

20140311-121052.jpg

After the thin set dried the following day, he went back through to remove spacers and apply grout. Once the grout is applied, you have go back over everything with a damp sponge and remove the film the grout leaves behind.

20140314-090308.jpg

And then, you sit back and admire. I am over the moon with this kitchen and what it has become.

20140314-133307.jpg20140314-135425.jpgMy husband’s talent and innate knack for this is so inspiring. I’m going to pick his brain and and do a more in depth post about what we have done in the kitchen. As you may have been able to tell, I’m not the most knowledgeable with describing what he did and how he did it. Anyway, a post to come soon with details on the concrete countertops and the rest of this transformation.

Also, a really fun side note…not only are the concrete countertops DIY, but my dad made us all new cabinet doors and trimmed the window (and all of the other windows in the house). This home is a true labor of love.

Taco Tuesday: Pinto Bean & Kale

20140311-190948.jpg

Although this may sound delicious to some of you, this was a bit of a gamble in my house. I came across this recipe and thought wow, that sounds amazing, but then I hesitated. My husband isn’t really an onion fan and he prefers spinach to kale. And then I decided, experimenting with different kinds of tacos is what Taco Tuesday is all about, so let’s do this!

I came across this taco recipe on Pinterest –here is the original recipe— and decided to make a couple small changes. I always have these multigrain tortillas on hand, so I used these instead of corn. Also already in my fridge, monterey jack cheese, so I used that instead of cheddar. Lastly, I opted to melt a generous helping of cheese on the tortilla prior to adding the beans and veggies.

20140311-190959.jpg

One thing I did not photograph and should have is the beans. You see, I like to buy dry pinto beans and cook them slowly on the stove top with a lot of garlic, half a white onion, salt, pepper and cumin. So, for this recipe, I did not use canned beans, but you could easily do that if you don’t have the time, or the desire to spend a couple hours making beans from scratch.

20140311-191019.jpg

Although my husband said there were too many onions, he did say that the flavors were really good, so perhaps the next time I do this, I’ll add some more kale to mask the onions. All in all, I’m calling Pinto Bean & Kale Tacos a win.

Today’s BGD // 3.10.14

Not only was my Monday off to a wobbly start, but the sky was grey, and with the time change, I was a little sleepy. However; being determined to find the best in each day has brought me to yesterday’s BGD, a little thing called quality time with those you love and working with your hands. It’s really the best of combinations. I spent my evening with a bestie, making tutus for the St. Paddy’s Day Dash (a tradition that we have upheld for the last 6 years), while my husband (the handiest guy on the planet) tiled the backsplash in the kitchen. We laughed and we enjoyed admiring all of our creations at the end of the evening.

20140311-121030.jpgSneak peek of the tutu I will don on Sunday for the dash.

20140311-121052.jpgSneak peek of the gorgeous backsplash tile going up in our kitchen. (Please excuse the awful lighting.)

This BGD just goes to show that the start of your day can be a little rocky, but if you hold on the finding the best in your day, you just might hit the jackpot.
